Each time I get ready for the next round of training, I start to plan out my long runs and where I’m going to venture to in order to hit my mileage. Sometimes, those runs end up on busy pedestrian and cyclist filled greenways, other times, I’m on single track trails in my local state park. Better yet, every so often I get the chance to go somewhere completely new to me if I’m traveling for work or a weekend getaway with the family. But no matter where I end up, I always have my security in the back of my mind.
Depending on where I end up, I try to always have my phone and ID on me, and sometimes I take pepper spray along or the handy whistle that is on some of my hydration packs. But I do worry if something could happen, not just from a careless driver or the chance of an encounter with an attacker, but if I had a health emergency. Too often you hear about perfectly healthy people who collapse on a race course or while out on their run. Call me paranoid, but I prefer to think of it as prepared.
For this reason, I picked up a RoadiD a couple of years ago. I love it and the peace of mind that it gave me, but honestly, remembering to wear it, throwing on another gadget on my arm, or sometimes remembering where I last put it down, have always been issues. In fact, until I received my Sidekick in the mail, I had been unable to locate it (I eventually found it collecting dust in a drawer). When I heard that RoadiD had a new product that could attach to your existing device, I was super excited to be part of the testing group. After all, what good is a product if you don’t remember to wear it? Could this be the solution to my problem?
To start with, I went to the RoadiD website and selected the RoadiD for Fitbit and Garmin. At the time that I ordered the Sidekick, I was wearing the Garmin Forerunner 235, but since then I have switched to the Garmin Forerunner 935. I had the option of a 19mm or 13mm Sidekick, so after looking up my watch specs, I went with the 19mm. The hardest decision then became which color: Slate, Graphite, and Rose Gold. I love pretty much everything Rose Gold but figured that Slate would probably go best with my watch.
After you’ve selected your Sidekick size and color, you’re taken to the screen to input your information. I went with the simple format of name, city & state, emergency contact details, and blood type. I have a funky one (AB+) so I figured it could be handy to list. You can pretty much put anything that you want, including inspiration sayings, your favorite quote, etc. But I went with the basics. After that, I clicked ‘order’ and shopped for a couple of other items on the site.
My favorite part of this process was their order communication. I started to receive a stream of emails that tracked the progress of my order. Here it is below:
It ultimately shipped the same day that I ordered it, and 3 days later was in my hands (or should I say, on my watch?). Installation was so easy. It slid right on to my watch band and paired perfectly with the style of my 235. When I received my 935, I slide it off and over in about 30 seconds. So easy if you’re moving it between devices, though I keep mine on consistently as the design looks very much a part of my watch. The price for the RoadiD is just $19.99, and so far it has held up to the usual every day wear that I dish out to my accessories. And as my watch is waterproof, I also wear it swimming.
In regards to the comfort of the Sidekick, you don’t even realize it’s there. I feel no different wearing it on my watch than when I don’t. It gives me that extra piece of mind when I’m heading out for a run. I have friends with other health issues such as diabetes that like to have a note indicating such.
I also ordered my kids the RoadiD Kids ID. You order one engraved plate and they include 3 different bands. I used the smallest for my 4 year old and the middle for my 6 year old. They love the funky ‘Electric’ band and insist on wearing their bracelet when they head out. We like it when we are in crowded places like the state fair or festivals, hikes or chaotic playgrounds, or even when they are at track out camp field trips. So they pretty much wear them every day!
I 100% recommend the RoadiD if you are looking for an easy way to access your emergency access information when you are out on your adventures. It’s a simple way to provide identification if needed in case of emergencies, and is an affordable solution; made even more so with the below discount details!
